World Friendship Day

30th July 2021

Today is World Friendship Day, which, of all of the recognised awareness and celebratory days (and there are many!), we think could be one of our favourites. As a school community especially, we’re constantly observing the importance of being a kind friend to others and the positives of being a part of a closely knit group. In order to use the day to celebrate friendships, we thought we’d share some fun games and activities you could enjoy over the summer with your friends.

Chalk Art

Especially on a sunny summer’s day, gathering everyone together with some chalk is a great way to get creative. You could even try drawing each other, or playing a game (i.e. swapping drawings at regular intervals to see what you can create together).

The whisper game

The whisper game can be really funny and is also a great way to demonstrate the ways in which stories can be twisted once they’ve been spread through lots of people. To play, get everyone to sit in a circle and choose one person to start off. They need to pick a phrase or sentence and whisper it to the person to their right. Then, this person will whisper what they’ve heard to the person on their right, who will do the same, and so on. The last person will say what they’ve heard out loud to the group – it rarely matches the original statement!

The ‘in common’ game

This game is particularly great if you’ve got some new friends that you’d love to learn more about. The premise is super simple, but you can end up having a lot of laughs and you might be surprised about what you find out! Once you’ve got your group together, the aim is to find seven things that everyone involved has in common, which is achieved by sharing facts and interests, as well as by asking lots of questions.

Make your own board game

We all know that board games are a great way to get everyone together and can be a lot of fun, but have you ever considered creating your own? All you need is some card (a big sheet is great but if you’ve only got A4, taping a few sheets together also works), some coloured pens/paper and your imagination! You can take inspiration from your favourite existing games or start completely from scratch – the best part about making your own game is that the possibilities are endless.

We hope this gives you some ideas of activities to do with your friends in celebration of World Friendship Day this year!
